Black Girls Rock - The Musical
May 25th, 26th @ 8PM, May 27th @ 3pm New York Times acclaimed playwright, JD Lawrence, (the creator, executive producer, and star of Bravo’s “Your Husband Is Cheating On Us”), bring to The Paramount a show that is not only educational, but entertaining. JD Lawrence’s Black Girls Rock is a thought-provoking, inspiring, and witty theatrical presentation written and directed by the NAACP Legacy Award-recipient. Lawrence’s Black Girls Rock is a show for everyone, in the soul-stirring spirit of Hidden Figures and Fences. The show takes place at a local city bus stop where a young lady named Hope decided to skip school to avoid a Black History exam she refused to study for because Black History Month is over. As she lets several buses pass without getting on the, she notices another young lady, Rosa, is not getting on the bus as well. However, it’s for an entirely different reason. As the two make small talk, Rosa informs Hope who she is as well as the importance of Black History and why Hope should get on the bus. When Hope reluctantly rejects Rose’s candid advice, Hope decides to take the subway that’s just feet away from the bus stop. As she leaves the bus depot, she comes face to face with a woman Harriet and is once again erminded of the importance of Black History. This time the gloves are off as no-holds-barred Harriet gives Hope a dose of reality. Will Hope get on the bus or will she let a life lesson pass her by? Get ready to be “edu-tained” in this historical and poignant presentation.
