Alva Nelson, a multi-faceted musician, has performed & recorded with Lightnin' Hopkins, Kirk Whalum, and Regina Belle. He has been musical director for "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Violet", and "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" and produced Dorothy Leigh's "A Second Chance", for which he wrote three songs. "Soul Eyes" is Alva Nelson's latest jazz piano release. Nelson has received three "Meet the Composer" Grants; won 1st Place in the Composers' Guild Composition Contest with "Synonymous Dichotomy" ('83), "Buster's Bounce" ('85) and "Tranquil Jubilation ('88); and was selected as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Throughout the 1990's, Nelson performed, arranged, and orchestrated music for the Boys Choir of Harlem, including engagements at Carnegie Hall & Alice Tully Hall with Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle; Hubert Laws and the St. Luke's Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta.
